Two days after its ordinance of secession was passed on 10 January 1861, the Florida Militia took over the Pensacola Navy Yard and all its forts except one, Fort Pickens, which continued to blockade the entrance. Captain Victor Randolph, late of the United States Navy, was put in charge of the naval installations. The state also seized the side-wheel gunboat Fulton at Pensacola but she was a complete wreck and was never fitted out. All state naval resources were transferred to the Confederate States Navy in March 1861.
