The Independent State of Acre was proclaimed in July 1899 by Brazilian rubber workers from the plantations situated in a huge area of what was then Bolivia. They were defeated in March 1900, but proclaimed the State of Acre again in November. After fresh defeat in late December, in August 1902 they finally achieved independence, only for Acre to merge with Brazil in May 1903. In the three rebellions the Acreans created small navies with three river steamers (Liberdade, Rio Afuá, Manaus) in 1899-1900; one steamer (Solimões) and a Bolivian river launch (Alonso, renamed Rui Barbosa) captured from their owners in November-December 1900, and two steamers (Independência and María Teresa captured from the Bolivians) in 1902-03.
