Created after the state seceded on 19 January 1861, the force consisted of two steamers (Savannah, Huntress) and one brig, each armed with a cannon. The personnel came also from the USN and the merchant marine. After his resignation from the United States Navy, Lieutenant Commander John McIntosh Kell was placed in charge of the Navy, until the arrival in March of Captain Josiah Tattnall, who received the rank of Flag Officer. The Georgia Navy joined the Confederate States Navy in April 1861.
