The state seceded on 20 May 1861 and organized a small navy, arming four steamers (Winslow, Ellis, Beaufort, Raleigh) and enlisting 140 men. As in other state navies, most of the officers came from the USN after resigning their commissions. Commander William T. Muse was appointed to command the North Carolina Navy. All its resources were transferred to the Confederate States Navy in July 1861. The only engagement with the USN took place in Oregon Inlet between USS Albatross and NCSS Beaufort (21 July 1861). The heavier-gunned Albatross, forced the Beaufort to withdraw.
